Colour authority Pantone’s Color of the Year distils global trends into one colour which will express the mood of the current year. For 2019, they predict that the lively Living Coral (16-1546), a salmon-pink hue, will be front and centre. Bright and optimistic, Living Coral is ‘animating and life-affirming’, and has a ‘golden undertone that energises and enlivens with a softer edge’, says the Pantone Color Institute.
It is easy enough to embrace the positivity of Living Coral with a new coral-coloured bag or clothing, but at home? If you absolutely love the hue, go ahead and paint your walls, but for most of us, it’s probably more practical to inject it in small doses. Think rugs, upholstery and cushions. Which colour schemes go with Living Coral? We’ve put together three mood boards using tiles, which pair perfectly with the trending colour.
The impact of Living Coral is strongest when placed against neutral colours, and shades of grey are its best companion for sophisticated appeal. The mood board above features tiles in a medley of textures and finishes in various grey tones that best shows off the vivid coral hue.

To conjure up a bright and airy environment, pair Living Coral with white and lighter shades of grey, and complement with wood tones for a cosier feel. Again, don’t forget the textures. Adding simple patterns such as gridlines create more visual impact without over-complicating the overall look.

The lively Living Coral also works as a quick pick-me-up in the bathroom, and goes well with tiles in neutral colours such as stone and clay, as well as terrazzo tiles! Use coral as an accent colour in a bathroom, in the form of smaller tiles such as mosaics.
